07/05/2007 - Trashion show - Rags 2 Riches in Cambridge

The most innovative reuse event in Cambridgeshire will take place on 8th June at Manor Community College, Arbury from 7.30pm. Come and look at the latest trends in fashion - made from reused or recycled materials!

An amazing fashion show will see rags turn into riches in Cambridge when students from colleges and community groups in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough put their skills to transform waste into pieces of clothing and accessories.

The event is a partnership project of Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycling Network (CCORRN), Manor Community College and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership (RECAP). It aims to highlight the benefits that reuse and recycling bring to the environment in a funky and innovative way.

Reuse and recycling are an excellent way to prevent rubbish end up in landfill, save resources and reduce our carbon footprint. For instance, recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy it takes to make new aluminium – and produces only 5% of the CO2 emissions.

Victor Perez, Waste Campaigns Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council on behalf of the RECAP partnership said: "Changing public perceptions of reuse and recycling is crucial if we are to successfully reduce carbon emissions. It is very important that future generations understand the value in waste has as a resource and the environmental benefits of reusing and recycling"

"This event has been designed to encourage young people and children to put their creativity and talent into the environment and to demonstrate that the possibilities of transforming waste into something useful are truly endless"
