A series of roadshows are set to tour the County helping Cambridgeshire residents have a green Christmas this year.

Cambridgeshire residents are already at the top of the Christmas tree when it comes to recycling in the UK but the festive period usually produces bulging bins.

The RECAP Waste Team (Recycle for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Partnership) together with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) are launching the campaign to get us in the green festive mood over the next few weeks.

Members of the team will be manning stalls at a range of events throughout the region to encourage people to have an environmentally friendly Christmas.

Staff will be handing out free cotton bags, fridge magnets and leaflets with simple top tips on how to reduce and recycle Christmas packaging, and compost Christmas trees and food waste at home or via the council’s services.

There are promotions including reduced price compost bins, food waste campaigns and ideas for Christmas presents for all the family.

Stalls will be at the popular ice-rinks in Cambridge and Peterborough Cities, the Wood Green Christmas Food, Drink and Craft Fair in Huntingdon, and local markets.

To get into the green mood catch up with the team at one of the following venues:

  • Tues 11th Dec, Yaxley Christmas Information event, Broadway Shopping Centre 10.30am to 3pm
  • Thurs 13th Dec, Ely Market, Market Square 10am to 3pm
  • Thurs 13th Dec, Peterborough Ice Rink, Cathedral Square 9am to 4pm
  • Fri 14th Dec, Cambridge Ice Rink, Parkers Piece 10am to 2pm
  • Fri 14th Dec, Ramsey farmer’s market and Christmas Information event, 39 Great Whyte 10am to 1pm
  • Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th Dec, Wood Green Animal Shelter, Huntingdon 10am to 4pm
  • Monday 17th Dec, Wisbech Fenland Fair, Bridge Street 8am to 4.30pm
Liz Hawkins, Waste Campaigns Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “The amount of rubbish thrown into bins, and ultimately landfill over the Christmas period is equal to 50kg per person, or 910 mince pies each!  Much of this could be avoided by recycling, composting or reducing. Simple ideas like buying presents with less packaging or composting your Christmas tree could reduce the thousands of tonnes of rubbish which ends up in a hole in the ground adding to climate change.”
