09/10/2006 - CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME FOR RECYCLING

Waste chiefs are urging shoppers to buy and give to charity shops and furniture reuse groups to support good causes and reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Buy now, Donate later! is the core message of the award-winning campaign ‘Choose2Reuse’, which aims to increase awareness about the important socio-economic and environmental benefits of reusing items.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership and the Association of Charity Shops will be launching the campaign on 9th October at Burleigh Street, home to many charity shops in Cambridge.

The consumer campaign ‘Buy now, Donate later’ will build on the success of the previous ‘Donate it’ campaign, which helped charity shops to increase donations and recruitment of volunteers through the ‘Reuse Champion’ initiative.

More than 55 new volunteers subscribed to the scheme filling all type of roles according to their skills, interest and experience.

Cambridgeshire County Council already recycles more than 50% of the county’s waste, but growing population and more stringent legislation and targets mean we need to prevent waste in the first place.

Cambridgeshire County Council Waste Campaigns Officer, Victor Perez, welcomed the campaign: “We’re delighted to see community initiatives thrive and help us divert waste from landfill. Charity shops and community organisations play a key role in society by raising funds for good causes and providing opportunities for training and development for those in need. We would like to encourage residents to take part in the campaign and visit their local participating shops, they’re full of unique and good value and quality items.”

‘Choose2Reuse’ started in Cambridgeshire in 2004 and with funding from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and partnership with the Association of Charity Shops expanded to East Anglia in 2005.
