Westfield school in St Ives are so proud to have achieved Eco School Status, and they have provided a free seminar and demonstrated to other schools in the area the extensive environmental work they did to attain their award.
The seminar included sessions on everything there is to know about eco schools, how they can get involved and the day concluded with a tour around the school lead by the Eco Schools committee members.
The demonstration highlighted that pupil involvement is a key part of the Eco-Schools programme. Having pupils engaged in the whole process, including monitoring, action planning and decision-making, leads to genuine ownership of the programme and increases their sense of responsibility for the school environment and local area.
The Vice Chairman of the Council, Councillor John Davies who supported the seminar said, “The seminar went extremely well and it is excellent Westfield School are leading the way with this initiative. It would be excellent to see more schools in the area take part in the programme to support the environment and raise their profile in the wider community.”
Stuart McCarthy, Headteacher said, “The programme was extensive but it was extremely rewarding to pass on our knowledge and expertise to encourage others to achieve the award. Our school has become a more stimulating place in which to learn and will hopefully reduce the environmental impact on the community.”
