RECAP tips for what to do with those cards, leftover food, wrapping paper and trees!
When are my Christmas collections for recycling and rubbish?

Christmas cards
- Send e- cards instead.
- Save and re-use card as gift tags for next year
- Buy cards made from recycled paper – look on the back of the pack.
- Buy cards that are made from paper not plastic and without lots of glitter/ glue/ stuck on bits, as these cards cannot be recycled.
- Recycled your cards (ones with no plastic or stuck on bits) at branches of Tesco and WHS Smith in from the 2nd to the 31st January
- Recycled your cards (ones with no plastic or stuck on bits) in you local kerbside collection:
- Cambridge City: green bin
- East Cambs: brown sack
- Fenland District: blue bin
- Huntingdonshire: blue bin or green box
- Peterborough City: green bin
- South Cambridgeshire: green bin
Christmas cards can also be recycled in the cardboard recycling containers at the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Food Waste
Cambridgeshire
If you live in Cambridgeshire you can help stop all left over food going to waste by using your kerbside composting collection.
All food waste including fruit and vegetables, bread, turkey, meat and bones, Christmas pudding, and cheese can be collected at kerbside as follows:
- Cambridge City: green bin
- East Cambs: brown sack
- Fenland District: brown bin
- Huntingdonshire: green bin
- South Cambridgeshire: green bin
Remember to wrap your scraps in paper before placing in the bin to keep it clean.
Peterborough City
If you live in Peterborough you can help stop your Christmas food scraps going to waste by home composting all your fruit and Veg peelings over the festive season.
Please do not put any food waste into your brown bins.
Wrapping paper
- Re-use paper where possible. Some of it could also be kept for craft activities for kids.
- Invest in reusable gift bags (and ask for them back!) to limit the amount of paper you need.
- Only wrapping paper actually made from paper can be recycled. Plastic or foil wrapping should not be put into recycling containers but put in with ordinary refuse collection.
Please use the following kerbside collection containers:
- Cambridge City: Green bin
- East Cambs: black box- folded and bagged with the rest of paper.
- Fenland District: green refuse bin
- Huntingdonshire: green bin
- South Cambridgeshire: green bin
- Peterborough: Green bin
Christmas Trees
- Buy a reusable tree
- Buy a planted tree with roots so it can be kept for the next year!
- Real Christmas tree can be recycled at any of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
- Alternatively they can be recycled in the following ways:
- Cambridge City: Take to Cherry Hinton Hall until the 20th Jan.
- East Cambs: put out with you brown sack collection
- Fenland District: Put out with your brown bin
- Huntingdonshire: Put out with your green bin
- South Cambridgeshire: Put out with your green bin
