03/08/2007 - Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire residents can now recycle more!
Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire residents will be able to recycle even more of their household rubbish from this week with the launch of a new two-year carton recycling trial.
Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District Councils are working on a project with Tetra Pak Ltd to establish carton collection points at supermarkets and other local recycling centres across Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire.
To find out which recycling centres you can take cartons to for recycling, City residents can visit www.cambridge.gov.uk/recycling or call 01223 458282 and South Cambridgeshire residents can visit www.scambs.gov.uk/recycling or call 08450 450 063.
Each year, UK carton manufacturers produce approximately 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid foods/drinks. This equates to around 2.3kg of cartons per household which could be recycled instead of being sent to landfill.
Although cartons cannot be added to household recycling bins or boxes, this new scheme means that used paper-based cartons, such as those made by Tetra Pak, can now be recycled at special collection points at some recycling centres. Once collected they will be taken away to be baled, transported to a recycling mill and turned into a number of different recycled products, including high-strength paper bags and envelopes.
