29/11/2007 - Free visits, training and information on recycling and waste reduction for local businesses

Waste chiefs are set to help businesses across Cambridgeshire recycle more and possibly save money. To help businesses to recycle more, reduce waste disposal costs and comply with new legislation, local authorities in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are of

The funding is provided through the Business Resource Efficiency & Waste Centre for Local Authorities (also known as BREW). The project aims to provide advice on trade waste recycling and facilitate practical arrangements. This service complements advice already provided by your local District Council on trade recycling services in your area.

A dedicated team are visiting business parks in the county working with businesses to reduce costs by sharing collection arrangements. For more information on how your business could get involved in this project contact Darren Hughes, e-mail darren.hughes@huntsdc.gov.uk or phone 01480 388805.

If you are unable to fit in a visit from the team they can provide a business leaflet. This gives information on how to carry out a basic Waste Audit in your premises; reduce the amount of waste you actually produce; set up in-house recycling collections; and posters to raise awareness of waste issues amongst staff.

Free visits and subsidised training are also providing this advice, as well as how to re-use items through the local community and charity groups, and identify financial savings through proper waste management. There are to be around 200 of the free visits to companies between now and March. If your company would like a visit, please contact Gemma Sortwell at Resource Saver – 01223 411494, 07870 194172 or gemma@crn.org.uk.

Emma Joy, Waste Partnership Co-Ordinator for the Recycling in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Partnership said: “DEFRA are wanting local councils to get more involved in helping local small businesses to reduce and recycle their waste. We are happy to take on this new initiative as it will help companies cut costs, be more environmentally sound and meet their corporate social responsibility. We are working with a number of private waste contractors as well as the District Councils in Cambridgeshire to provide more trade recycling services, and training days for businesses are planned for the New Year”.
