The award winning Environmentally friendly Cambridgeshire has been announced top County for Recycling in England for the third year in a row.

Residents in Cambridgeshire have achieved a massive 48.5% rate of recycling.  They have also come top in the amount of waste produced per person – with the lowest rate in the country of just 264kg residual waste per person.  Also, these two achievements are crucial in reducing the amount of waste to landfill.  Peterborough City Council is the highest performing Unitary Authority in the country with a 43.8% recycling rate.

Cambridgeshire County Council has been working closely with the District and City Councils, who have also achieved superb results.  All the councils have contributed to the overall success.  The RECAP (Recycle for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough) partnership consists of Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, Fenland District Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, Peterborough City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Together Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have topped the leader-board in first and second position for the green recycling Waste Disposal Authorities.

Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire District Councils came in the top ten for recycling and composting rates.  Both have very successful kerbside collection schemes in place, which are popular with residents as an easy way to recycle.

Fenland District Council also proved its worth, when recently awarded a “Highly Commended” in the National Recycling Awards for its Recycling Target Success.  The meteoric rise in recycling rates due to their “Getting it sorted” campaign impressed the judges.  This effort is reflected in their inclusion in the top ten for improvement in waste generated, and improvement in composting and recycling rates.

South Cambridgeshire District Council also come top in the country for its green waste recycling, composting nearly 33%.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough as an area is full of good examples for other districts to follow.  But the good work doesn’t stop here.  With no time to sit back on their laurels the Partnership have developed a Waste Prevention Strategy as part of the overall Waste Strategy, which will be launched in the new year.

Councillor Murphy, Chair of the Waste and Environment Forum, said “The County, City and District Councils should all be congratulated for this result.  It is the culmination of hard work across the area, getting the recycling and waste reduction message out there.  It is also pleasing that more and more residents are doing their bit and contributing to the massive reduction in waste sent to landfill in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.  It is something for us all to be proud of”.
