19/09/2008 - Happy Bin Project comes to Cambridgeshire schools

This October Cambridgeshire schools will be welcoming the Happy Bin Project to help them reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill.

Happy Bin

The Happy Bin Project www.happybin.org.uk uses various teaching aids such as puppet shows and activity plans to bring awareness to schoolchildren about where waste occurs and its many forms, the consequences of producing waste, such as climate change, and how to minimise the waste they produce.

Schools which have been visited by The Happy Bin Project have managed to reduce the weight of materials, including school meal waste destined for landfill by more than 50%.  Some schools were even able to reduce their waste by 80% or more!

Children from:

  • St Peter’s Junior School in Wisbech,
  • Wheatfields Primary School in St Ives
  • Ely St Mary School
  • Little Thetford Primary School
  • Peakirk cum Glinton Primary School
  • John Clare Primary School in Helpston
  • Middlefield Primary School in St Neots
  • Orchards C of E Primary School in Wisbech
will be set a six week challenge of weighing their waste and seeing how they can reduce this weight from what they have learned from the scheme. The Happy Bin website will be updated regularly on each school’s progress, so pupils can keep track of how well they are doing.
