17/02/2009 - Now you can recycle while you shop!
Shoppers and tourists can now recycle their cans and plastic bottles 'on-the-go' in Cambridge thanks to four new street litter recycling bins that are being piloted by the Council in the city centre.

The recycling bins match the style of the Cambridge 'heritage' litter bins, but should be easy to spost as they are larger and emblazoned with the messaege 'recycle here'. The four trial sites are on Kings Parade (near Kings College chapel), Market Square (near Rose Crescent), St Andrews Street (near Boots) and at the end of Christ's Lane.
Street Services Development Officer, Bob Kerry says, "We are getting a great response from residents recycling at home, now we want to help people recycle away from home too. Cans and plastic bottles make up a lot of what we find in our litter bins, so we hope these new recycling bins will mean we can save these items from landfill. Please walk those extra few yards - it's worth it."
Colin Rosenstiel, Executive Councillor for Environmental and Waste Services, said, "This latest initiative demonstrates the Council's commitment to recycling as a sustainable way of managing waste. Every single item we can recycle or divert from landfill saves resources and helps combat climate change."
Visitors to some of Cambridge's open spaces, like Cherry Hinton Hall and Lammas Land, are already able to recycle their litter one site. If the pilot of these new recycling bins is successful, the council hopes to extend the scheme to other parts of the city.
