The Partnership’s winning project, a scheme to encourage local businesses to recycle their waste, included the setting up of recycling collections and the development of a useful guide to help small and medium sized businesses understand legislation and the waste services on offer.

The councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough contributed £257,000, and successfully bid for a further £213,000 of Government grants, to fund the scheme.

The judges commended the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership for the excellence they demonstrate in working together to achieve the best results in waste management, while the Government is using the scheme as an example of best practice across the country.

Edward Cowley of the Waste Partnership said,

“This project aimed to fill a significant gap in recycling services and we are delighted it has won such wide recognition. Currently householders in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough benefit from a full range of recycling services but small and medium sized businesses don’t have the same benefits. Through this project, we have found some practical solutions to really make a real difference to recycling for local businesses.”

Councillor Peter Murphy, Chair of the Waste Partnership said,

“We are proud that all our hard work on making recycling easier for local businesses has been recognised with this award. Our residents have already achieved one of the highest recycling rates in the country. We encourage our local businesses to follow this success and recycle as much of their waste as possible.”
