15/04/2009 - New MRF approved for Peterborough
Plans for a new materials recycling facility have been approved by Peterborough City Council.
Plans for a 100,000-tonnes capacity materials recycling facility (MRF) were approved by Peterborough City Council’s planning and environmental protection committee today (Tuesday 14 April 2009). The new facility is an essential element in the city council’s integrated strategy to raise recycling rates to over 65 per cent by 2020 and to use non-recycled waste as fuel in an energy-from-waste plant. The new MRF will be developed in an existing 58,278 square metre building at Storeys Bar Road in the Fengate industrial area of Peterborough. The plans include a 2,024 sq m reception hall extension to the rear and 264 sq m and 180 sq m additions to the sides. The front of the building will provide new accommodation for the city council’s award-winning Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Re-use centre, giving it capacity to repair, recycle and dismantle around 20,000 domestic appliances annually. The new materials recycling facility will replace the city council’s existing MRF, which has an annual capacity of 75,000 tonnes and occupies an adjoining site with access from Fourth Drove. A further planning application, submitted at the end of January, proposes using the old MRF site for the construction of an energy-from-waste facility that will produce electricity and heating water.
