02/07/2009 - Compost Workshop Spreads Sustainable Living Message
Schools in Peterborough are being invited to discover how a simple compost bin can teach important lessons and spread sustainable living messages among children and their families.
The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary School at Tollgate, in Bretton, Peterborough, is hosting a special ‘composting workshop’ for school governors, teachers, support staff and parents on Wednesday 8 July 2009 from 3.45 pm to 5 pm. “As a flagship school, Sacred Heart is committed to sharing good practice in helping pupils and the wider community understand the importance of protecting our environment and improving conditions for local wildlife. “The simple act of composting garden materials and food scraps produces a nutrient-rich soil improver that can be used when growing plants. In addition, it teaches children to be responsible for their environment and can be the basis of many valuable lessons in science and other related subjects. We want to share our experience with other schools.” The initiative has been welcomed by Peterborough City Council’s senior community engagement officer Kirsty Martin. She said: “I hope this compost workshop and other activities at Sacred Heart encourage many more schools to include composting in their own eco-lessons.” The workshop will be led by Kirsty Emmerton, eco teaching assistant and master composter for schools.
