15/07/2009 - Mums Brewing Up For Nappy Natter!
A group of mums in Burwell are preparing to encourage parents to bin disposable nappies for good.
Organised by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Real Nappy Network (CPRNN), the village’s first Nappuccino – a coffee and cake afternoon with a difference – will take place on Friday 17th July from 2.00pm until 4.00pm at the Trinity Church Hall. Mums, dads, grandparents and carers are all invited to drop in for a cuppa and a chat – and a play area will keep little ones entertained while the grown-ups find out just what makes washable nappies so popular.
CPRNN Project Administrator Helen Coupe said: “The Nappuccino will be a fantastic opportunity for parents to see and feel modern washable nappies in a relaxed and friendly environment, and learn how using them could save their household around £700 (and more if the nappies are used on subsequent children) – not to be sniffed at in the current economic climate!”
Washable nappies not only save families money, they can help to combat climate change. Of course, all nappies use energy, whether it’s the manufacture of disposables or the washing of cloth ones, but a report published by DEFRA and the Environment Agency last October shows that sensible washing of nappies at home has less environmental impact than using disposables.
And of course there’s the waste issue – each baby will use around 5,850 disposable nappies, most of which are destined for landfill and take hundreds of years to biodegrade. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership's Waste Prevention Plan, released earlier this year, includes increasing the use of washable nappies as one way in which we can reduce our environmental impact. The plan can be found at www.recap.co.uk.
Nappy experts will be on hand at the Nappuccino to provide advice, information, hints and tips, and there will also be sales of new and used nappies and high quality second hand clothes. Why not drop in and discover why so many parents are choosing the soft option?
