15/07/2009 - Council Launches New Scheme To Collect Household Batteries

Peterborough City Council has today launched a new scheme to collect household batteries for recycling.

New battery collection containers have been installed at Peterborough City Council's Householders Recycling Centre in Dogthorpe and at the Customer Service Centre in Bayard Place, Broadway. By recycling household batteries in this way, residents can prevent them going into landfill where they are difficult to dispose of as they contain hazardous substances. Around 6 million batteries are sent to landfill in the UK every year, amounting to 22,000 tonnes - which is the equivalent weight of 110 jumbo jets. The average household uses 21 batteries per year - so it is hoped residents will now make full use of the council's new scheme. Peterborough City Council's waste management officer Shah Faisal, said: "Regulations will come into force in January 2010, which will discourage batteries from being disposed of in landfill sites. "Peterborough, with its overall recycling rate of 48.06 per cent in 2008/09, is ahead of many councils in providing strategically located containers for the public to collect and recycle household batteries. This is an extra service which has come about as a result of us listening to residents' requests."
