27/07/2009 - City Council Teams Up With Argos To Recycle Old Catalogues

Peterborough City Council has joined forces with Argos to promote recycling in the city.

Argos has just issued the latest edition of its catalogue, which means many residents will be binning their old one over the next few weeks.

Peterborough City Council's recycling contracts officer Amy Nebel is urging city people to make sure they recycle their catalogues rather than sending them off to landfill sites.

The catalogues can be recycled either by putting them in the green recycling bin, taking them to your local Argos store, where they will be collected for recycling, or taking them to a local recycling site.

Amy said: "There are thousands of Argos catalogues in circulation in Peterborough, so if everyone did their bit and recycled their old one it would really make a difference. The easiest thing for residents to do would be to put their old catalogue in their green bin."

Argos produced 36 million catalogues last year, using approx 96,000 tonnes of paper. The catalogues, which weigh about 2kg each, are 100 per cent recyclable and can be used to make newsprint and other recycled paper products - including new Argos catalogues.

Amy added: "The council's aim is to recycle and re-use more than 53 per cent of the household waste produced in the city in 2009. Therefore it is important that residents ensure only the correct recyclable items are placed in their green bins. We have recently launched our 'Keep It Clean' campaign to emphasise that only good quality recyclables can be sold to make new products. Materials that are contaminated with non-recyclable waste have to be landfilled, which damages the environment and adds to disposal costs.

"Residents can be confident that by putting their Argos catalogue in their green bin they will be actively supporting Peterborough City Council's recycling aims for the year."
