27/08/2009 - Residents’ Efforts Make Cambridgeshire a Cleaner And Safer Place
As many as forty people have recently given their time to the Cambridgeshire Community Clean-up, sponsored by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership.
Seven community groups recently applied for funding to organise the community litter picking events in their local area. The first groups to hold their litter-picks were the Parson Drove Street Pride Group in Wisbech and Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve in St Ives. So far the open spaces in Cambridgeshire were freed of dozens of bags full of litter collected during the two successful events. This is an encouraging start for the whole series of litter-picking events that are planned for coming weeks all over the county. The latest events proved that litter picking can be rewarding and fun. Litter pickers, supported by scouts and a diving club in St Ives were surprised by the variety of items they found such as microwaves, road cones, bikes and shopping trolleys. John Cook from the Parson Drove Street Pride Group in Wisbech said: “It was a successful event and the publicity resulted in the recruitment of one new member. The grant enabled us to further advance the enhancement of the local environment.” There are still grants of £100-200 available from the Cambridge Community Clean-up Fund for voluntary organisations willing to tidy up their local environment. More information can be found on the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation website at http://www.cambscf.org.uk/ or by calling 01223 410535.
Councillor Peter Murphy from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership which sponsors the Fund said:
“It’s great to see the commitment of our communities to help look after their local area and work for the benefit of the environment. I hope that even more residents will take advantage of the grants on offer and organise or join a local litter-picking event. Summer is still at its best, and litter picking can be a great opportunity to spend time in the great outdoors.”
