21/12/2009 - Festive bin collections easier this year

Cambridge City Council has announced that disruption to bin collections in Cambridge over the Christmas and New Year period will be minimal this year.

A council spokesperson said, “Collections which would fall on Christmas Day will move to Monday 28th December, and collections which would fall on New Year’s Day will move to Saturday 2nd January. All other collections will stay the same – so changes will only affect you if your normal collection day is a Friday.” Under the new system bin collection staff will work an extra shift on Monday 28th December to prevent collections moved from Christmas Day affecting all collections in the following week. The council is optimistic that the new blue recycling bins will help residents to recycle more of their Christmas waste, but said that anyone who has not yet got a bin can carry on recycling with their boxes – they just need to put both out on their green bin day. Police are also urging people to keep all rubbish and recycling inside their bins. Packaging from large Christmas purchases such as television sets can signpost thieves to properties with expensive equipment if it is left outside at the front of the house. A council spokesperson said “It’s best to take large boxes like this to a big recycling centre such as the one on the A10 near Milton. It can only be collected from the kerbside if it is inside your bin.” Milton recycling centre is open from 9am-4pm every day except Christmas Eve (9am-1pm), and closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
