Disposable menstrual products contribute significantly to landfill waste, with the UK producing 200,000 tonnes annually. In 2019, the 180,000 residents of Huntingdonshire sent about 260 tonnes of these products to landfill. By offering reusable menstrual cups, the partnership aims to tackle this environmental challenge by enabling residents to adopt more sustainable habits.
With this initiative, we hope to support 1,300 women in switching to reusable period products. This will prevent the disposal of about 264 single-use menstrual items annually per person, or approximately 343,200 items for 1,300 individuals per year.
Bryony Rothwell, Waste Partnership Manager at RECAP, stated:
“This programme reflects our commitment to waste reduction. By providing such incentives, we’re hoping to enable our residents to make sustainable, cost-effective choices.”
Emily Smith, Head of B2B, UK & International at Mooncup, said:
“We are thrilled to partner with Cambridgeshire County Council and RECAP on this important initiative. By providing them with reusable menstrual cups, we continue to support the cause of making sustainable choices accessible.”
Residents of Cambridgeshire can order their Mooncup online through their respective council’s website.
